Hi everyone, it’s Nathan Derry with JohnHart Real Estate, here to celebrate one of my favorite “holidays” of the year—National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day! This year, it falls on Friday, December 20th, so mark your calendars, raid your closet, and prepare to horrify your family, friends, and unsuspecting co-workers with the loudest, tackiest sweaters you can find.

Now, I know what you’re thinking: “Nathan, why on earth would anyone celebrate ugliness?” Here’s the thing: Ugly Christmas Sweater Day isn’t about fashion. It’s about embracing the ridiculous, having a laugh, and remembering that the holidays are supposed to be fun (and maybe just a little bit cringe-worthy).

A Little Ugly Sweater History

Ugly Christmas sweaters didn’t just magically appear one day. They’ve been lurking in holiday family photos since your mom put you in that reindeer number with blinking lights and 3D antlers. But it wasn’t until the early 2000s that people started embracing them ironically and hosting “Ugly Sweater Parties” where the best of the worst sweaters earned you serious street cred (and maybe a fruitcake or two).

Since then, designers have doubled down on their mission to out-tacky each other, resulting in sweaters featuring everything from LED lights and pom-poms to scented patches (yes, seriously) and full nativity scenes across your torso. In other words, this is the one day of the year where your sweater can and should cause double-takes in the grocery store and concerned looks from your neighbors.

Why Embrace the Ugly?

  1. It’s a Conversation Starter: Nothing says “Holiday Cheer” quite like a sweater that makes people say, “Wait, is that a hip-hop Santa riding a dinosaur?” You’ll never struggle for small talk at holiday parties again.

  2. Keeps You Warm and Amused: Sure, you could wear a classy turtleneck, but will that turtleneck spark joy? On Ugly Sweater Day, warmth pairs with wacky humor, and that’s worth more than any elegantly knitted cashmere.

  3. Office Participation: Ugly sweaters can turn a dull Friday into a communal event. Picture it: the entire office rocking gaudy knitwear, snapping pics for social media, and momentarily forgetting about quarterly reports. Sign me up!

  4. Memorable Family Photos: Years from now, when you look back at your family holiday photos, you’ll chuckle at your questionable sweater choices. It’s all about creating fun memories you can laugh about later.

Tips for Going Fully Ugly

  • Layer Up: Wear something comfy underneath, because let’s be honest: that 100% acrylic masterpiece might not feel like a warm hug.
  • Accessorize: Don a light-up Christmas necklace, a Santa hat, or some candy cane earrings to push your ensemble into legendary territory.
  • DIY If You Dare: Feeling crafty? Add some hot-glued ornaments or attach a battery-operated mini light show. Just remember, the line between “ugly” and “fire hazard” is thinner than that garland you’re sewing onto your sleeve.

I’ll Definitely Be Wearing Mine

As for me, I’ll be proudly sporting a sweater so atrocious it might make Rudolph run the other way. (Hint: it may or may not involve a yeti holding a candy cane and winking at Santa.)

So, on Friday, December 20th, join me in celebrating National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day. Put on your sparkliest, cheesiest, and most questionable attire. Because in a world where style often rules supreme, it’s kind of nice—just for one day—to let your inner tackiness run wild.

Happy holidays, everyone!
