Hello, everyone! I’m Nathan Derry with JohnHart Real Estate, here to shed some light on an everyday item that’s often overlooked—thermal paper, the kind used for most receipts. While they may seem harmless, these papers can contain chemicals that have hidden health risks. Here’s what you need to know about thermal paper and the potential dangers of handling it regularly.
What Is Thermal Paper?
Thermal paper is a type of paper that changes color when exposed to heat, making it ideal for receipts and other print-on-demand documents. The print is created without ink or toner; instead, heat-sensitive chemicals are coated on the paper. The most common chemical found on thermal paper is Bisphenol A (BPA), though Bisphenol S (BPS) is often used as a substitute.
Why Are BPA and BPS Harmful?
-
Endocrine Disruptors: BPA and BPS are known endocrine disruptors, which means they can interfere with hormone function. Even low-level exposure to BPA has been linked to issues like hormone imbalance, developmental problems in children, and potential fertility issues.
-
Skin Absorption: When you handle thermal paper, BPA or BPS can transfer to your skin and potentially enter your bloodstream. Studies suggest that frequent contact—such as through handling receipts—can lead to higher-than-average BPA levels in the body.
-
Increased Risk for Cashiers and Retail Workers: People who handle thermal receipts frequently, like cashiers and retail staff, have a higher risk of BPA and BPS exposure. The risk can be particularly high for those handling receipts for hours each day without wearing gloves or washing their hands regularly.
-
Environmental Impact: When thermal paper is discarded, BPA and BPS can leach into the environment, contaminating soil and water sources. Recycling thermal paper also spreads these chemicals, as BPA can transfer to recycled materials and even end up in food packaging.
Recognizing Thermal Paper
Thermal paper feels different from regular paper. It is often slick and smooth, with a slight sheen. You can test it by scratching the surface with a coin—if it leaves a mark, it’s likely thermal paper.
How to Minimize Exposure to Thermal Paper
-
Limit Handling: Try to handle receipts as little as possible. Instead of taking physical receipts, opt for digital copies when available.
-
Wash Hands After Handling: Washing your hands can help reduce the amount of BPA or BPS that enters your bloodstream. Avoid using hand sanitizer immediately after handling receipts, as it can increase skin absorption.
-
Store Receipts Separately: If you need to keep a paper receipt, store it in an envelope or separate compartment, away from personal items like your wallet or phone to reduce transfer.
-
Ask for Alternatives: Some businesses offer receipts printed on BPA-free paper or use other printing methods. If you’re concerned, ask if they use BPA-free options.
Future of Thermal Paper
With the growing awareness of the dangers associated with BPA, many countries and states are pushing for BPA-free thermal paper options. Companies are also researching alternatives to BPA and BPS, though viable and affordable solutions are still in development.
At JohnHart Real Estate, we prioritize the health and well-being of our clients and community. Knowledge is the first step toward making safer choices, and being aware of the chemicals in everyday items like thermal paper helps us protect ourselves and our environment.
