Hey everyone, Nathan Derry here from JohnHart Real Estate, and today, we’re taking a slight detour from the real estate world to celebrate something near and dear to my stomach—National Lobster Day! Now, I’ll admit, for a long time, I didn’t get the hype around lobster rolls. Lobster? Sure. Rolls? Definitely. But together? A rich burger??? How does that work?

Then one fateful trip to Portland, Maine, changed everything. I was introduced to The Highroller Lobster Co., and let me tell you, Oh! Em! Geeeee! How did someone think to put those ingredients together to come up with such a thing?! It was like a gourmet flavor explosion that left me thinking, “Where has this been all my life?” Lobster, butter, mayo, maybe a hint of lemon—all piled into a perfectly toasted bun? Pure genius.

While Portland is on the other side of the country for me (I’m an L.A. guy, after all), I have to say that this was worth the trek. And if you're ever in that neck of the woods, you MUST check it out.

But What About Los Angeles?

Okay, so you're not jetting off to Maine anytime soon (understandable), but fear not, because Los Angeles has some pretty incredible lobster rolls of its own. If you’re craving a lobster roll fix in sunny L.A., let me direct you to a local favorite: Broad Street Oyster Co. in Malibu. This spot nails it with their West Coast twist on the classic roll, and the views of the Pacific while you enjoy that buttery goodness don’t hurt either.

The Anatomy of a Perfect Lobster Roll

What makes a lobster roll truly roll (pun intended)? Here’s what I’ve learned from my experience as a lobster roll convert:

  1. The Lobster: Fresh is key. Whether you’re in Maine or Malibu, the lobster has to be tender, juicy, and cooked just right.

  2. The Roll: It’s all about the bun. A perfectly toasted, split-top bun is the foundation. Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. It’s like a lobster bed… but edible.

  3. Butter vs. Mayo: Here’s where things get divisive. Some purists swear by butter, others go for mayo. And some, like me, just say “why not both?”

  4. The Extras: A splash of lemon? Sure! A pinch of seasoning? Yes, please. It’s all about keeping the flavors simple yet luxurious.

A Lobster Roll Is Like Your Dream Home

Wait, what? How do lobster rolls relate to real estate, you ask? Well, much like finding the perfect lobster roll, finding your dream home is about balance. You want just the right location (whether it’s Portland, Maine, or Los Angeles), the ideal layout (or ingredients), and, of course, that “Oh! Em! Geeeee!” factor when you know you’ve found the one.

So, on National Lobster Day, treat yourself to a lobster roll. Whether you’re on the East Coast or West, there’s always a lobster roll that’s calling your name. And if you need help finding a house that gives you that same satisfying feeling, you know where to find me!
