Greetings! I’m Nathan Derry with JohnHart Real Estate, and today, I’m taking you on a virtual tour of one of the most extraordinary paleontological sites in the world—Cal Orck’o in Bolivia. This site is a true marvel, offering a window into the distant past when dinosaurs roamed the Earth.

The Magnificent Wall of Cal Orck’o

Cal Orck’o is famous for its massive limestone wall, which stretches for nearly a mile and stands over 100 meters high. With a steep inclination of 72 degrees, this wall is not just an impressive natural formation; it’s a testament to the immense geological forces that have shaped our planet over millions of years. It’s important to note that these ancient dinosaurs didn’t scale the wall like Spider-Man—the wall was once part of a flat, muddy landscape that has since been uplifted by tectonic activity.

A Record of Prehistoric Life

The site is home to more than 5,000 individual footprints and 462 distinct tracks, each telling a unique story of the dinosaurs that lived in the region around 68 million years ago. These tracks were left by at least eight different species, including both carnivorous theropods and massive herbivorous titanosaurs. The diversity of species and the sheer number of tracks make Cal Orck’o one of the most significant dinosaur track sites in the world.

One of the most remarkable features of the site is a single track that extends for over 300 meters, offering a rare glimpse into the long journey of a dinosaur. This track, along with the others, provides invaluable insight into the behavior, movement, and environment of these prehistoric giants.

Capturing Cal Orck’o

Photographers Jerry Daykin, Ramon Kristian Arellano, Pete Oxford, and Carsten Drossel have captured stunning images of Cal Orck’o, bringing the site’s incredible details to life. Their work showcases the textures and patterns of the footprints, allowing us to appreciate the scale and significance of the site, even from afar.

A Must-Visit Destination

Cal Orck’o is now part of Parque Cretácico (Cretaceous Park), where visitors can explore the tracks up close and learn more about the dinosaurs that left them. The park offers guided tours, life-sized dinosaur replicas, and interactive exhibits, making it a fascinating destination for visitors of all ages.

Whether you’re a dinosaur enthusiast, a geology lover, or simply looking for a unique travel experience, Cal Orck’o is a site that offers a captivating journey through time.

Happy travels,
