Labor Day is more than just a long weekend signaling the end of summer. It’s a day that honors the contributions of American workers to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. As your Realtor, Nathan Derry with JohnHart Real Estate, I want to reflect on the importance of this day and also share a little something special for your holiday barbecue.

The History of Labor Day

Labor Day was first celebrated in New York City on September 5, 1882. It was born out of the labor movement, which advocated for fair wages, reasonable working hours, and safer working conditions for American workers. Over time, the idea of honoring workers spread across the nation, and in 1894, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a national holiday.

The day honors the economic and social contributions of workers and serves as a reminder of the power of organized labor and the importance of worker rights. While it has become a day of rest and relaxation, it’s important to remember the sacrifices made by workers who fought for the rights we have today.

A Little Real Estate Perspective

In real estate, Labor Day often marks the tail end of the peak selling season. While some might see the end of summer as the end of their house-hunting journey, it's actually a fantastic time to find great opportunities. The market may slow down a bit, but that’s where I come in—helping you navigate through the options and finding the best deals. Whether you’re looking to buy, sell, or just need some real estate advice, I’m here to assist you.

And Now… A Recipe for Delicious BBQ Ribs

As we celebrate this important holiday, what better way to enjoy it than with a plate of tender, juicy BBQ ribs? Here's a simple and crowd-pleasing recipe to add to your Labor Day festivities:

Ingredients:

  • 2 racks of pork baby back ribs
  • 2 tbsp paprika
  • 1 tbsp garlic powder
  • 1 tbsp onion powder
  • 1 tbsp salt
  • 1 tbsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp cayenne pepper (optional for a kick)
  • 1 cup of your favorite BBQ sauce

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C).

  2. Prepare the Ribs: Remove the silver skin from the back of the ribs if your butcher hasn’t already done so. This allows the spices to penetrate better.

  3. Make the Dry Rub: Mix the paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper in a bowl.

  4. Season the Ribs: Rub the dry spice mixture all over the ribs, making sure to coat both sides evenly.

  5. Bake the Ribs: Place the ribs on a baking sheet, cover them tightly with aluminum foil, and bake for 2.5 to 3 hours. The ribs should be tender but not falling apart.

  6. Finish on the Grill: Heat your grill to medium-high heat. Remove the ribs from the oven and place them on the grill. Brush generously with BBQ sauce and grill for about 10 minutes, turning once, until the sauce is caramelized.

  7. Serve and Enjoy: Let the ribs rest for a few minutes before cutting. Serve with extra BBQ sauce on the side.
