Hello, I'm Nathan Derry with JohnHart Real Estate. As temperatures rise during the summer months, it's crucial to be mindful of how the heat affects our beloved pets, particularly their paws. Unlike humans, dogs typically don't wear shoes, which means their paws are in direct contact with hot surfaces. This can lead to burns, overheating, and even heat strokes. Let's dive into some essential tips on how to keep your pet safe and comfortable during the hotter months.

The Dangers of Hot Pavement

  1. Burns:

    • Hot Surfaces: Pavements, asphalt, and sand can become incredibly hot under the summer sun. If the temperature outside is 85°F, the pavement can reach over 140°F. At this temperature, skin destruction can occur within a minute.
    • Symptoms of Burns: Look for signs like limping, licking or chewing at the feet, and visible damage to the paw pads.
  2. Overheating and Heat Stroke:

    • Risk Factors: Walking on hot surfaces can raise your dog's body temperature, leading to overheating and potentially heat stroke. Unlike humans, dogs don't sweat through their skin but regulate their temperature through panting and sweat glands in their paws.
    • Symptoms of Heat Stroke: Excessive panting, drooling, reddened gums, vomiting, diarrhea, and uncoordinated movements.

Preventing Burns and Overheating

  1. Walk During Cooler Times:

    • Early Morning or Late Evening: Schedule walks during the cooler parts of the day to prevent exposure to hot surfaces.
    • Shaded Paths: Choose walking routes with plenty of shade to minimize the time spent on hot pavement.
  2. Protective Gear:

    • Dog Booties: Consider using dog booties to provide a protective layer between your dog's paws and hot surfaces. They can significantly reduce the risk of burns.
    • Paw Wax: Applying paw wax can create a protective barrier against hot surfaces.
  3. Hydration:

    • Access to Water: Always carry water for your dog and ensure they stay hydrated during walks. Dehydration can exacerbate the effects of heat.
    • Cooling Products: Use cooling vests or mats to help regulate your dog's body temperature.

Understanding Surface Temperatures

  1. Different Colors and Textures:

    • Dark Surfaces: Dark-colored pavements and asphalt absorb more heat and can become hotter than lighter surfaces.
    • Textured Grounds: Rough and textured surfaces can also retain more heat compared to smoother surfaces.
  2. Testing the Surface:

    • Hand Test: Place the back of your hand on the pavement for seven seconds. If it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for your dog's paws.

Additional Tips

  1. Stay Indoors: On extremely hot days, it's best to keep your pet indoors, especially during peak heat hours.
  2. Cooling Stations: Set up a kiddie pool or use a hose to create a cooling station for your dog to cool off.
  3. Monitor Behavior: Always keep an eye on your dog's behavior for signs of distress or discomfort during walks.

Taking care of your dog's paws during the hotter months is essential for their health and well-being. By choosing the right times for walks, using protective gear, and being mindful of surface temperatures, you can prevent burns and overheating. Remember, while our feet may not feel the heat due to shoes, our pets are much more vulnerable. Let's keep our furry friends safe and enjoy a happy, healthy summer together.

I'm Nathan Derry with JohnHart Real Estate, reminding you to prioritize your pet's safety this summer.  By following these tips, you can ensure that your pets stay safe and comfortable even during the hottest months of the year.
