A guy pumping gas at a gas station

Hello everyone, Nathan Derry here from JohnHart Real Estate. Today, I'm switching gears (pun intended) to share some valuable tips on how to get the most out of every gallon when you fill up your car. With fuel prices always on the move, knowing these tricks can save you money and help your car run more efficiently. Let's dive in!

Time Your Fill-Ups Wisely

Early Morning Advantage: Only buy or fill up your car or truck in the early morning when the ground temperature is still cold. All service stations have their storage tanks buried below ground. The colder the ground, the denser the gasoline. When it gets warmer, gasoline expands. So, buying in the afternoon or evening might not give you the full gallon you're paying for. The specific gravity and temperature of gasoline play a crucial role in its volume. Service stations do not have temperature compensation at the pumps, so take advantage of cooler temperatures.

Pump at a Slow Speed

Trigger Tips: When you're filling up, avoid squeezing the trigger to the fastest mode. The trigger has three stages: low, middle, and high. You should be pumping on low mode to minimize vapors created while pumping. All hoses at the pump have a vapor return. If you pump on the fastest setting, some of the liquid that goes to your tank becomes vapor, which is then sucked back into the underground storage tank. Pumping slowly ensures you're getting more liquid fuel and better value for your money.

Keep Your Tank Half Full

Reduce Evaporation: Fill up when your gas tank is half full. The more gas you have in your tank, the less air occupies its empty space. Gasoline evaporates faster than you might think. Gasoline storage tanks have an internal floating roof to minimize evaporation by maintaining zero clearance between the gas and the atmosphere. By keeping your tank more than half full, you reduce the amount of air and thus minimize evaporation losses.

Avoid Filling Up During Deliveries

Sediment Stir-Up: If you see a gasoline truck pumping into the storage tanks at the gas station when you stop to buy gas, do not fill up. The gasoline being delivered can stir up sediment that usually settles at the bottom of the tank. Pumping gas while the sediment is stirred up can lead to dirtier fuel entering your car's tank, which could affect engine performance and fuel efficiency.

By following these simple yet effective tips, you can ensure you're maximizing your fuel efficiency and getting the most out of every gallon. Remember, small adjustments can lead to significant savings over time. Happy driving!

Stay informed, drive safe, and make the most of your fuel!
